Loads of people write me, seeking advice about breaking into data science. That’s a little surprising since I’ve been pretty darned public about my dislike of the rebranding of data analysis. “Data science” is just what programmers call statistics, or their version of statistics, anyway.
If a career in programming appeals to you, and you’d like to work on applications that involve some analytics, then, by all means, become a data scientist. If that’s your goal, you should really go talk to some folks who share your tastes. On the other hand, if you’re fascinated with data analysis, and not sure where that fits in your professional life, you should investigate a wide range of options.
