Three Steps To Getting Past ‘Innovation Theater’ With Data Analytics

Surveys show that innovation and analytical thinking are the top skills enterprises seek going forward into the digital future. But while organizations seem to crave such skills, they aren’t doing nearly enough to encourage the potential innovation their employees and managers are capable of delivering.

That’s because talking up innovation and actually becoming an innovator are two separate things — and, unfortunately, most companies talk the talk but don’t walk the walk. “We call that innovation theater, when the organization kind of dances to the tune of innovation on a show-and-tell basis, but doesn’t actually do anything in a substantive fashion,” says David Shrier, lecturer at MIT Media Lab, founder of Distilled Analytics, and co-author of Trust::Data: A New Framework for Identity and Data Sharing.
