Called the “Sexiest Job of the 21st Century” by a Harvard Business Review article in 2012, the title of “data scientist” may already be starting to lose its luster (and that’s not because data isn’t sexy).
As companies everywhere apply the title to the most basic of data analyst positions, it’s becoming synonymous with “a person who works with data.” That definition probably won’t help you build a world-class data-science team. Indeed, I believe the true requirements for a world-class data-science team — which go far beyond buzzwords — remain intact: A team must combine the best of research-fueled curiosity with profit-fueled pace.
