Phoenix Children’s Uses Big Data Dashboard to Curb Chemo Side Effects

At Phoenix Children’s Hospital, a real-time big data dashboard is helping to reduce nausea and vomiting in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. While chemotherapy is an effective form of cancer treatment, it can also come with significant side effects. Providers must synthesize a wealth of big data to ensure patients are receiving the best possible care, and to reduce unintended consequences of therapy – most notably nausea and vomiting.

Clinicians can diminish these effects with anti-emetic medications, but the amount of information they need to make sure they’re administering the correct medications to the right patients can be overwhelming. Physicians are expected to match the patient’s chemotherapy with the appropriate anti-emetic, and this can be challenging when managing multiple patients, or when patients’ doses or treatments change.
