Seven years after the New York Times heralded the arrival of “big data,” what was once little more than a buzzy concept significantly impacts how we live and work.

At the end of 2018, in fact, more than 90 percent of businesses planned to harness big data’s growing power even as privacy advocates decry its potential pitfalls. As analyst and author Doug Laney puts it, big data is defined by three Vs: volume, velocity and variety. There’s lots of it flowing in at great speeds from numerous sources.
