So You Want a Data Science Internship?

If you’re in the middle of a statistics/computer science degree or in the midst of a career switch, you’ll likely be in the market for a data science internship. You might think that your day to day would be comprised of cleaning data and trying out some scikit-learn models. But is that really the case?

Like internships in all other industries, the real answer is: it depends. The goal of this article is to provide a brief overview on the key characteristics of data science internships that I’ve gleaned from a series of networking calls, chatting with fellow interns across different organizations, and my own internship at DoorDash. There are two high level characteristics that define your time at your internship: degree of structure and role expectations.
